Statistically speaking, the poorer the state, the more military members that state will produce. Same goes with education. Lower education=More military involvement.

I was surprised by the Dakota's until I remembered that quite a few large corporations are moving their home offices there due to tax breaks.

Link? The OP directly contradicts your statement.

Also, the military is wonderful for social mobility upward for a lot of kids. I'm often amused at the logic gymnastics some people will go to explain both how the military is 'preying' on poor kids, but also is an enormous opportunity for them.

One of the reasons the military has so many people from low income backgrounds is that many from the north east or upper class families think they are too good or valuable to serve the country. I knew several enlisted guys from NICE parts of San fransisco and New York, who literally joined because it was what their families expected of them. They didn't need the money, they both either partially or were the sole owner of a small business.

The military is a great way for poor and working class kids to escape poverty, but it's these kids who are the true casualties of war. Our world policing and exercise in nation building make a small number of people a ton of money, and you can bet it isn't the parents of our dead or wounded.
