Austin is different in terms of demographics. Austin has hardly any blacks, particularly central Austin which has almost none. The east side has some, but gentrification and the tax man are quickly chasing them out. Austin is white liberals and hipsters up against white libertarian gun freaks and conspiracy nuts; it's not grimy or really that weird. Hell, Houston is weirder and WAY grimier. SF and NYC are REAL weird. Austin is white, new, and clean. Don't base your impression on 6th Street. That's pretty much the only non-pure-white non fancy-arse brand-new trendy white thing in town.

Austin's white population is less than 50%. There are over 60,000 blacks in the city. Athens' white population is 65%. There are under 20,000 blacks in the city. The difference here are the amount of Hispanics. Hispanics account for 35% of Austin, whereas it only accounts for 5% of Athens.
