Is Athens really that liberal?

63.2% of Clarke County voted for Obama in 2012, making it the second bluest county in the SEC after Richland (USC). Anyone can explain this? Race can't be the reason because Tuscaloosa County has similar demographics but went 58.2% for Romney. Never imagined Athens to be almost as liberal as Ann Arbor or Boulder.

Always has been. It's hippie central
By the way, the racial makeup of the two aren't exactly the same. Clarke only has around 120,000 whereas Tuscaloosa has close to 200,000.
Also the black population in Tuscaloosa is a higher percentage than Clarke.
So yes Athens is little Austin. Weird. Gritty. Hipster. College.

College students vote democrat.
Then they enter the real world and grow a brain.

They prefer the term "progressive," but yeah it's always been like this. It's the arts and music capital of the state and the county and city lines are virtually the same (making Clarke the smallest county in the state).

It is somewhat surprising that the states of the South have voted for Republican presidents so often considering the high percentage of blacks and their somewhat disturbing need to always vote democrat.

Liberal progressives typically dominant academia. It's a key component of the liberal agenda.

Richland County SC (voted 66% for Obama of those who voted, and that's key) is only 47% black but 99% of the blacks are gonna vote liberal because you know you're gonna have all the racist blacks voting for the black man ... plus the white-guilties mixed-in, and most of the mexicans which makes-up about 4% of Richland County. Then you've got all the bleeding heart liberal university students who had their heads opened and bullshite poured-in by the liberal professors, (many of us were impressionable to the liberals back in our college days- but not me) ... anyways, they'll come around to the good side eventually.
But all told Richland County was what for Hussein ... 66% of those that voted?
What that really means is that 85% of the blacks voted in 2012 (more if you count the dead ones that voted), while a smaller percentage of whites voted ... probably less than 50%.
Richland County is mostly liberal though. Richland and Orangeburg Counties .... high black population = high percentage of liberal voters. That's two counties outta 46 ... of which, counting the two aforementioned there are probably a total of four blue counties in this state.
Owell.

All of the well-to-do white republicans in the area live in Watkinsville/Oconee County.
Go look up how they voted.

Every college town is. Know any conservative educators?

You say that like it is a bad thing. I am a proud southern liberal democrat.

Most college towns are liberal.

Nothing like a good "lib bashing" by mouth breathers who reinforce each others' ignorance.

A lot of the students (particularly from the N. Metro and South Georgia areas) are very conservative but their permanent addresses are still their parent's houses, so their votes aren't tallied in Athens. The townies, University faculty, and poor minorities all usually vote straight Democrat.
A lot of townies in Athens are part of the music and arts scene, so it's a completely different demographic from Tuscaloosa townies.

There is more at play than just race and age. Indiana, Mississippi, and Arizona had almost identical voting numbers in the last presidential election, but you would be wrong to draw the conclusion that their voting concerns were identical.

Good lord, that's embarrassing. Hopefully Conservatives get the White House back in 2016. If not, I'm scared...
