quote:
A House subcommittee has approved a measure that would close South Carolina State University to allow the school to correct its finances.
The Higher Education and Technical Colleges subcommittee approved the measure on a 3-1 vote Tuesday afternoon. The bill still must go to the full House Ways and Means committee, and potentially the entire House, for consideration.
If approved, the school would shut down July 1st, and remain closed for the 2015-2016 school year, and then reopen. All programs, both academic and athletic, would be affected.
Qualifying students would have the option to transfer to another state school.

Somewhat different in that it was the university of Alabama thatbshut down UAB while this instate SC government shutting down SC State.
Plus there's a legit reason to shut down SC State. Bama shut down UAB for shits and gigs

Kentucky State University was in similar financial straits last year. A strong KSU president dropped the hammer on nonpaying/slow paying students by dismissing 1/4 of the student population. He also laid off 20% of staff. He gave $90,000 from his own salary so that the lowest earning workers would get a cost-of-living raise.
Sometimes the managers of schools have to take draconian measures to keep the state from stepping in but they can show compassion to those most affected, too.

The school is reopening. It's not like it's shutting its doors forever. And Clemson and U S Carolina ought to prepare for an influx of minority (black) students transferring in and staying esp. since the state is paying for tuition.
