Just because the Little Rock Observer and Tupelo Gazette named them National Champions doesn't mean they actually won a National Championship.
AP and the UPI all picked different teams that year

The FWAA was as respected as the AP or UPI in the 60s.

I've heard the '64 Razorbacks referred to as national champions like 500 times in my life, by like 500 sources. I'm inclined to say AP and UPI be damned. And a little [further] research on the subject reveals this:
In 1964 AP and UPI (and most others) still voted their National Champions before the bowls. Most of us know this. In 1964 both Arkansas and Alabama finished their regular seasons undefeated (10-0). AP and UPI voted Alabama #1 and Arkansas #2.
THE KICKER: Alabama lost the Orange Bowl (to Texas) to finish 10-1. Arkansas won the Cotton Bowl (over #7 Nebraska) to finish 11-0. The Football Writers Association of America, which waited until after the bowls to vote its nat. champ, obviously chose Arkansas. And it obviously looked superior to either AP or UPI, which obviously ended up looking STOOPID.
KICKER #2 (THE FINISHER): The VERY NEXT season AP waited until after the bowls to name its national champion.
I'm thinking given this information we can now ALL include 1964 with 1941 re Alabama's CLAIM on national championships.

The offseason always brings out the best threads around here.

What about the NCAA? Kinda ruins that argument, no?

NCAA recognizes 1960 for us. So suck a dick.

Yep. Neither school has ever won an NC in football.
