Bruce was always an attention whore, and being an Olympic athlete enabled him to get it, but as he got older, he's gotten it by marrying the women that he has & going full on H-wood. That crap about him being the "level headed" parent of the family is just that - crap. He had just as big of a role in the tv show & the girls' "careers" as the crazy mom.
