Most likely, at the very least someone similar in action and message existed whom the story is based on. The overwhelming majority of biblical scholars (a huge percentage of whom are jewish or non-religious) agree he existed in some capacity. The "Jesus myth" theory simply requires too many rationalizations for me to buy into.
Even some of the greatest critics of Christianity dating back hundreds of years agree he probably existed.
