From the ESPN article:

"Several of the student-athlete representatives spoke passionately against the proposal that prohibits the removal of a scholarship for athletic performance. They argued that such a rule could inhibit team chemistry and undermine coaches' authority.

"People forget that it is our job to perform," Florida baseball player Josh Tobias said."

"Stipends, determined by institutions under federally created guidelines, have been estimated at $2,000 to $4,000 annually. They are designed to cover the cost-of-living expenses that fall outside athletic scholarships."

Based on the specific sports in the Alabama athletic department, there are 272 scholarship athletes. At $4,000 each, that's $1,088,000 per year. Not a significant amount for a Power 5 team, with the glut of cash coming in from TV contracts.

Several Republicans have paid for their daughters' abortions.

Several gays said they didn't want to get married.

Several Californians said they didn't smoke marijuana.

Your point?

Seriously: I like what those several players said. The article stated that one athlete in particular said that removing the threat of lost scholarship would reduce the coaches' authority and demoralize the team. I AGREE that their scholarships should not be guaranteed. I'm just forced to infer that the guarantee was won by SEVERAL other players' requests over SEVERAL years.
