What's the worse move your athletic department has ever made?

For Mississippi State, it may very well turn out to be the hiring of Rick Ray as basketball coach. The No. 3 assistant on a mediocre Clemson team should have never been considered for a $1 MM/year job. He has absolutely killed what was becoming a decent basketball program for SEC standards (6 NCAA T in 10 years is decent).
But is that the worse move in MSU history? How about firing Allyn McKeen.
From 1939 to 1948, he coached at Mississippi State, where he compiled a 65–19–3 record. In 1940, he was named the SEC Coach of the Year after leading Mississippi State to its only undefeated season in school history. The following year, his squad captured the first and only Southeastern Conference championship in program history. He retired from coaching in 1948 after being fired by Mississippi State's athletic director, Dudy Noble. His .747 coaching record at Mississippi State rivals some of the winningest coaches in the SEC
We also let Darrell K. Royal leave, who won multiple national titles at Texas and had the stadium named after him.
We suck.

fricking Fran. Especially when you factor in we were interviewing Urban Meyer at the time too.
ETA: WCA too fast on the draw.

Mike Archer over Steve Spurrier or Mike Shanahan.

This is the first thing you have ever posted that isn't entirely fabricated.
New year, new anc.

Our coaches apparently couldn't win the dance off for Evans commitment at the family birthday party.

Given Fran that extension.
Hiring him wasn't a bad move, it was universally well regarded at the time. The fact that we gave him an extension for jack really hurt us.

Hard to pinpoint just one mistake in a long history of mismanagement, but I'll say allowing Jan Kemp to tutor football players. Hindsight is 20/20.

To be fair, the three coaches prior to McKeen had records of 20-10, 15-8, and 29-12. He got canned after going 4-4 in '48, which was our worst season since at least the 1930's.
And Darrell Royal resigned and took another job.
Allyn McKeen.

Dennis Franchione.
His initial hiring, I'm ok with.
No one could've predicted his shocking ineptitude.
But the contract extension he was given?
Arguably the worst move in Texas A&M AD history.
