Alabama fans, how accurate is this post by Tuscaloosa regarding Kevin Steele?

This is what he posted on The Rant:

Perspective on Kevin Steele

I know you guys have been really upset about this hire for the most part - but I wanted to tell you all that losing Kevin Steele to LSU is not what anyone wanted to see happen - regardless of what any Bama fan tells you. I think most were anticipating him moving back into the DC role once Kirby found a head coaching gig.

In 2007, Steele led the least talented Bama team in 40 years to a fairly decent year. We ranked in the top half of the SEC on defense in every major statistical category. We were 3rd in the SEC for TFL, 5th in sacks, 6th in total defense, 4th in scoring defense, 4th in rushing defense, 3rd in INTs, etc... That was a team that lost to ULM and would be the first Bama team since 1971 to not have a single player drafted. Pretty good stuff.

Contrary to what has been posted here - Kevin Steele was not demoted to a position coach following the 2007 season. He was promoted to Associate Head Coach and "Head Coach of the Defense". Kirby Smart was given a promotion to "Co-Defensive Coordinator".

In 2008, Alabama's defense started becoming what it's been known for recently. We ranked 3rd in the conference in Pass efficiency defense, 4th in fumbles recovered, 1st in rush defense, 2nd in scoring defense (avg 14 pts/gm), 1st in total defense, etc... All top 10 rankings nationally.

I'm not sure what went down while he was at Clemson. Based on what I've seen, he really only had one bad year. It's obvious that Coach Saban thinks a whole lot of the man to hire him twice. The 2nd time he hired him he basically created a position for him just to have him on staff.

As far as recruiting goes - I'm not sure there's another defensive coordinator in America that is better at recruiting. Combine his recruiting strengths with Coach O and Les Miles on the same staff - all recruiting in the loaded state of Louisiana - and LSU will no doubt be absolutely STACKED for years to come.

I think you will all be pleasantly surprised at what Steele will do with an already extremely talented roster.

Wanted to see if other Alabama fans shared his views or if he was in a vast minority.

TIA

I see zero truth in that statement - from a fans perspective that knows anything more than a 3rd inning score.

Simply put, I know zero people outside of BR that think he is a good DC.

He is a great recruiter and good administrator. I hated to lose his recruiting abilities but his coaching skills are lacking.

Steele has been here before and probably will be again. Same goes for Lance. Although, I never want to see Lance here again.

I think that's a bit of hyperbole. He was in a support staff role before returning to the field for 2014. Very solid coach and great recruiter.

Below average coach, was a great recruiter, still very good, but no longer great. You just downgraded from Chavis in coaching and scheming. You basically hired a recruiter to run your defense.

I find this part interesting in light of some of his other unrelated posts.

The guy is a good person and good recruiter. I think he makes any staff better. I don't think he was ever going to be the defensive coordinator again at Alabama under Saban, but had a job in the program as long as he wanted one.

Um, I don't know what to say. The best defense we ever had was 2011, and he had almost nothing to do with it. He didn't really recruit any of the players that made it up, and no - I don't think he was really a "DC-in-waiting" or any such nonsense.

Unlike most people on the rant, I don't know how good he is, or how much you can attribute the success and/or lack of it to Steele instead of Smart or Saban. What we all know is that he has a great deal of experience and he has been coaching recently under a very successful head coach who is very hands-on.

No idea where he came up with that shite.

Saban's hired plenty of coaches multiple times. If they fill a void they fill a void.

By all accounts he's a really good recruiter. But let's be real. No one came to Alabama because of Steele. They signed with Alabama because of Alabama and Saban.

How did you feel when you first heard about the hire? Go with your first instinct.

I've always heard that Steele is a great individual - outside of football and with his players. He used to do a lot of speeches, as well as talk to church groups. He is obviously a very good recruiter too. So motivation is his #1 competency.

Coaching is probably the least he does to motivate kids, but he is nowhere near terrible. He is a durable coach.

Throw in Frank Wilson and LSU is a recruiting monster. Now will the staff be able to do anything with all of the potential talent coming in?

When I think of Steele, this is all I'm going to see:

It's the perfect marriage for Miles.

We've been on Gilligan's Island this entire time.

It all makes a shitton more sense now.

I was told this a couple weeks ago by some former LSU players (under Saban) who are now in the coaching business.
