I was shooting around on a side hoop and some young guys ask me to play 21 (used to call it "hustle" years ago), with the 1 point coming from the top of the key. All these guys are in their late teens or 20s and over 6'. I'm 45 and well below.

I cream 'em. Making steals, shaking people out of their shoes, hitting 2s beyond the 3-point line. I feel great until the end - I grab a rebound and do something to my knee. I just had my meniscus repaired last year. I sat for a bit but went back in to hit my last two shots (while limping bad) - and making 6 threes in a row at the top of the key to win. I could tell they were shocked that the old guy was so good.

Sucks to get old. I felt young and energetic out there, but am realizing my body can't handle it anymore. Hope I don't have to surgery again - I'm using my crutches at home right now hoping that it is just a strain but my foot feels like it is bowing outward a bit. Sigh.

We used to call it peach basketball back in my day.

You young whippersnappers in your 40's would just get schooled by the social security set.

Most of the young guys at the Y are just privileged kids there on their folks dime having dreams of the NBA while their insecurities wont let them try out for the community college team.
Hop down to your local public hoops area, the outcome may be different for you.

My Dad has a great line on this topic.

"When you get to be my age, it doesn't matter what you tell people you used to do, they look at you and don't believe you."

I am 6' and had a 40" + vertical. Dunking and blocking shots was such a joy. It's all gone and when I mention it people see a 6' tall bald dude and assume I am lying.

Played my last pickup basketball game at 42. Was playing against high school varsity kids and I was awesome. Gave it everything I had and had a blast.

Ended up with a bad lateral disc herniation and never played again - or even ran for that matter. At some point your body takes complete control of telling you what you can and cannot do.

Sucks.

it does indeed. i'm in my mid 30's and i have an ankle hangup that's killing me.

i made it throughout my 20's and early 30's without a thing hurting me, but i'm having trouble walking today after T25 last night.

never happened to me before in my life and it sucks.
