The death penalty gets tossed around by fans like candy in the face of any and all corruption. However, this is the one case where I think it absolutely applies. This completely violates the very purpose of college athletics and the mission of the NCAA.

I mean, paying players and recruiting violations are one thing but we can at the very least pretend that the players are at least still going to class and graduating as college-educated people with valuable degrees.

Not only does this tell us that for years, many athletes were not going to class but also that many athletes (and general students) were accepting inherently worthless degrees on account of their not completing anything resembling college coursework.

This isn't just a violation of the NCAA, but of SACS accreditation. Death penalty should be the least of UNC's worries.

I don't agree with the death penalty ever. It punishes the wrong people. They should be punished as harshly as possible in a way that impacts the current students as little as possible. Their degrees have already been tarnished enough, frankly.

Strip all wins from all athletic programs involved for the duration of the scheme, lifetime ban for all coaches, administrators, tutors, etc. who had even outside knowledge of the scheme or who should have known, from any work at any accredited institution of higher learning.

I think the NCAA is scared to get involved in a case of this magnitude given their relatively unstable position.
