No, the OP is true. Back in the 70s, if Bama was losing a game in the 3rd quarter, the SEC officials would add a 4th quarter (back then football games only had 3 periods) So, the SEC office asked Alabama to put four fingers in the air if they needed more time to win the game.
The tradition of eating peanuts at a football game also came from Alabama. They were brought to the field to feed the team mascot (they also invented the live mascot concept). One day their elephant didn't show up, so they began eating the peanuts...another tradition was born.
