Because they were afraid of losing control, not because they thought the people believed in the wrong god. Atheism itself isn't a principle, cause, philosophy, or belief system which people fight, die, or kill for. Being killed by an atheist is no more being killed in the name of atheism than being killed by a tall person is being killed in the name of tallness

Sure it is.. it's the same thing that the Roman church wanted.. power. Selfishness is the evil, whether abused by the church on those that choose not to believe.
