Agree with above poster. it just existed in different form. People forget how powerful the SEC was pre-expansion in the 1980's and 90's. Then, after Coach Stalings retired, Bama went on a suck-arse streak. You little whiper-snappers don't remember Bo Jackson, and Emit Smith at Flawda, or even Payton Manning.
Nick Saban is responsible for much of the current state. He built LSU into a power, then left for the NFL, then returned to Bama and revived that program to an unstoppable dynasty. Auburn, Ole Miss, and even MSU are now following suit. Hell, Arky looks to be a power again real soon.
