What in bama's history says they are above mediocrity and should be "settling"?
Have they ever been able to attract a better coach or have they always took a gamble with the up and comer?

I don't know.
2nd in Sec tourney titles
3rd in Sec regular season titles
Tied for 4th in NCAA appearances (2nd in pre expansion teams)
2nd in all time conference wins
Other than that, I got nothing.
