No way the auburn return man should have been flagged for delay of game when he waved off his teammates on the punt.
Saw this as well and you are correct.

Auburn fans are perfectly capable of fabricating rules without your help.
When in doubt...
"ARTICLE 2. No Team B player shall carry a caught or recovered ball more than
two steps in any direction after any Team B player gives a valid or invalid fair
catch signal (A.R. 6-5-2-I-III).
PENALTY—Dead-ball foul. Five yards from the succeeding spot [S7 and
S21].

No, he isn't.

Thanks for the info, I didn't realize the rule had changed. It's a shame to give a guy a delay of game penalty when he didn't realize he had signaled a fair catch.
Maybe we can give auburn another 30 yards of offense and a moral victory trophy?

But surely you won't mind penalizing him for being poorly coached, will you?

I've always understood that any distinct hand movement above the waist can be considered a fair catch signal.
I've seen numerous games where a guy gives a fair catch without knowing it, either waving teammates off or shielding his eyes from the sun.

They made the correct call. Player made an invalid signal. Stupid rule.. but the right call.
Something I didn't realize.. the "kick-catch" protection status lasts THROUGH a muffed catch up until the point the ball touches the ground. I figured you could blast a guy who muffed it immediately
