It also has a lot less to do with paying coaches because they deserve it and more to do with paying them because if we don't, someone else will. We're a year or two removed from some other program coming in and offering more than what we're paying for Lily, McLendon, Bobo, Sherrer, and Friend.
The quotes aren't grating because of the spending philosophy they represent (it's hard to sit here and say that UGA isn't getting everything and more for each penny it spends). What's grating is that the quotes seem to be both tone-deaf to what is bugging the fans and ignorant to how the current spending market is working. But short of changing their philosophy, I really don't know what else McGarity could say that would be better here. Not saying anything would piss us all off even more and saying it in a more PR-friendly way would only come off as patronizing. Give him credit, he says it like it is. It's just that what it is isn't what we want to hear.

quote:I just think he struggles with public communications honestly. When there's enough criticism out there, you can't just brush off peoples' concerns. And yea, it's a rough situation for him and I'm not going to sit here and even pretend I'd do any better at all. That's one thing I hate about public positions like that and one reason I'd never want one, you may very well be right but, unfortunately, how the message is delivered becomes almost as important as the message itself. Once it becomes a recurring theme and gets attached to you (like being "cheap" has to him), it's near impossible to shake it. Just look at Bobo for instance, he is still shat on all the time for his inconsistent playcalling early in his career. It's not fair but it is what it is.

It did kind of make me laugh that he says he is insulated and doesn't hear any of the criticism yet he basically rattles off the exact things people criticize him for. I agree that they're getting their bang for their buck, probably more so than any other SEC team honestly, but if that's what they're after as a top priority then they need to just admit it. Don't say you want championship caliber teams then rattle off several championship caliber teams and say that you don't spend as much as them because they've had more success. Especially when that's what you're being criticized for. I think he knows that wouldn't be the best selling point at the next fundraiser though.
TL;DR: how you communicate is almost as important as what you communicate and if getting your bang for your buck is your top priority, just admit it.
