I have not been to Houston in a millineum. Is the Galleria area a pretty good place to stay?

Is there a good place to stay in Houston? 
I stayed in the Woodlands the only time I've been to Houston.
I do have a friend that lives in Houston I can stay with, but meh, not worth the drive for a 6-6 bowl game.
