Are the best two teams in the nation in the field of four?

Yes.

So, what exactly did they get wrong?

Generally a field of four is the best four. I didn't realize as long as the best 2 were in the other 2 could drawn from a hat.

Considering the Big12, I wonder what the opinion will be in years where they get a team into the final 4 only because front running teams lose in their conference championship games.

Not true. That would hinder the goal of the field of four.

Namely, to ensure that the top two teams -- and by extension the number one team -- have a chance to play. By selecting the best four, you increase your chances that the best two are definitely in there somewhere.

I don't think any expansion to 6 or 8 would increase those chances in even a minor way.

People arguing over who is the eighth best team in the nation will be the death of college football.
