Why not just get rid of "formulas" altogether?

Re-organize to eight conferences, conference champs get in. No wildcards, no byes, no formulas, no mulligans. Use SOS for seeding.

Just straight up playoffs. Why are so many so scared of this concept? It just doesn't get any more fair than that.

No. That would destroy over 90% of teams.

Look at the SEC West. You currently have Alabama, LSU and Auburn as legitimate contenders in any given year. No wildcards would mean only 1 program gets a look, and if someone is currently hot (like Bama in this case) the others are eliminated.
So- why, as a recruit, go to LSU or Auburn? Answer- you don't; Bama is the team. Or outside to a different region; like Florida St, TCU or Ohio St.
