Why not just get rid of "formulas" altogether?

Re-organize to eight conferences, conference champs get in. No wildcards, no byes, no formulas, no mulligans. Use SOS for seeding.

Just straight up playoffs. Why are so many so scared of this concept? It just doesn't get any more fair than that.
