We don't need 8 teams in the playoff, we need four balanced conferences

The SEC was damn near being left out of the first CFB playoff. We need all the major conference champs to get in, and we need 4 balanced conferences.
There are three teams that must be in this year: Florida State, despite being in a weak conference, added some decent nonconference games with Ok St and Notre Dame, and Florida. They went undefeated against that, you have to put them in.
Alabama and Oregon won the best two conferences in football, respectively, and each added a legitimate nonconference game (Mich State being considerably better than WVU, but both are legit). With one loss each, they are locks.
There is no plausible way to determine the fourth slot. Ohio State won a weak conference, and played ONE marginally decent out of conference game, which they lost at home by two touchdowns. Baylor should be the B12 champs, but the conference is trying to game the system (if they had a championship game, this would be moot). Baylor played NOBODY out of conference. At least TCU played a pretty good Minnesota team out of conference, but they lost to Baylor. What a shitshow.
I have been saying we need 8 teams, but I was wrong. We need 4 teams. We just need a decent reorganization of the conferences and a consistent method of determining the champion.

5 conference champs and 3 top-rated non-conference champs determined by BCS formula.
Goodbye committee.
If you're on the bubble of #8/#9/#10:
-- You're lucky to be there if you make it,
-- If you don't make it, you don't have an argument.
So simple, a 'tard can understand it.

8 teams.
The champ for the big 5 + 3 at large.

To add to this... Why would anyone in their right mind want the SEC to go to 9 games under the current format?
The West damn near cannibalized themselves into oblivion.
Auto entry for a conference winner would solve most ills and de-incentivize scheduling OOC cupcakes.

Yeah, well, we need world peace also. I never get the point of starting threads saying we need shite that would never happen in a million years. Who in their right mind actually thinks that one of power five conferences ever would agree to being dissolved?

No shite. I have no idea why in the hell anyone would have ever thought that the #7 or 8 team in the country should be playing for the national championship, and Arizona proved that...as has Michigan State.

In order to have four truly "balanced conferences", you'd have to do something really stupid like send Auburn out to the Pac 12...remember the years when the Atlanta Braves played in the NL West? OK...that's an exaggeration...but you'd have to send teams out of their historical affiliations. You want "balance"? Then you can't have Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Miss. State, Florida, and Tennessee in the same conference. The SEC has had far more teams, from top to bottom, be consistently competitive over the years. To achieve true "balance", you'd have to break them up.

I think the 4 team playoff worked. There are three clear cut top 3 teams: Alabama, FSU, and Oregon. Any of the three remaining teams would have been totally out of the old BCS system as the real controversy would have been if only two of the top three had to be picked for one BCS game.
At the end of the day I expect Ohio State to get the fourth spot because they won their league outright and won the championship game. TCU and Baylor are co-champs and did not win their league outright.
Only having ten teams and no championship game will be the death of the XII, much like the way the old SWC was marginalized.

Exactly. The "controversy" this year is because there is not a clear and deserving fourth team. Has always been my argument that we are focused on inclusion rather than exclusion.

SEC was clearly down this year

LOL
I understand your point however, as a Gump, don't you find this statement to be somewhat hypocritical?

because this is easier to accomplish than an 8 team playoff
we just need other teams to play better!
