Well, this was written before Mal Moore hit the jackpot with Saban. He was pretty fricking terrible until that happened. Wasn't Rich Rod Mal's guy until the boosters stepped in?

No, Saban was his man from day one. The boosters stepped in because they didn't want to wait until after the NFL season and lose a recruiting season and forced him to offer Rich Rodriguez. There were some boosters that didn't want Saban because they knew he'd neuter their power over the football program.

According to Mal Moore:
RichRod was approached and told to keep quiet. A meeting was set up for RichRod and the Bama AD.
Someone blabbed about pending meeting...ESPN ran with it an Mal never contacted RichRod and did not go to scheduled meeting. Thinking was that the leak had come from him and Bama AD was mad and felt like his trust had been betrayed.
(Story told by AD at a gathering later)
His recount of waiting in the road in front of the Saban's house in Miami, Saban's reaction when he finally was allowed into the house, the attempt to keep all of that secret while being recognized at a private hangar at a small airport outside of Miami was also rather interesting.
