Is the only definition of a great team one that wins the National Championship? If so, there have been very few great teams.

Did you know that teams with 2 losses have been named national Champions on 19 occasions and one team with 3 losses has been named a National Champion?

If before the season someone had come on the board and said Georgia will finish 10-2 we would have all jumped on that....yet now we sit and blame Mark Richt for "another mediocre year". Honestly, MOST of the same posters screaming about Richt right now before the season took part in a "Time Capsule" and predicted 3-4 losses. Now that we have a chance to finish 10-2 many of those same posters are complaining about Richt being inferior, instead of lauding him for having a better season than expected.

Had Arkansas beaten Mizzou we would have been thrilled about playing for the SECCG and been saying Richt did a good job this year (Although we would have been disappointed we lost the way we did against Florida/South Carolina). Instead....because another team lost a game we are showing up in huge numbers criticizing Richt.

As for a Bowl? While I would prefer to be playing for the SECCG, we will probably go to a VERY good bowl if we take care of Georgia Tech.

The problem with accepting the record is that before the season, no one knew how bad Carolina and Florida would turn out to be. Those are two awful, awful football teams by anyone's standard, yet UGA lost to them anyways. There is a new standard in college football now, whether you like it or not; you either make the playoff or you don't.

ETA: Georgia will be sitting at home watching MISSOURI play for the SEC title. I think that's gonna irk a lot of fans too.

I don't really have a bad thing to say about the team/coaches/season. I think they exceeded most people's preseason realistic expecitations given the huge defensive turnover/cluster that happened in the off season.

That being said, the UF loss is what I'm hung up on. It was a baffling embarrassing and inexcusable loss to an inferior opponent. That game derailed our season and put our destiny in another teams hands. It was one of the most poorly played and poorly coached games I've ever watched. Because we decided to not show up to play Florida (how is that even an option given the intensity of that rivalry) we are stuck with the ole "woulda coulda shoulda" and "next year, man, next year is gonna be different" but that is what we say every year.

Georgia is not 11-2 or even 10-2 and might well finish 9-4. We still have remaining steps up the mountain to travel before this discussion holds merit.

Did you know that back in the old days, the polls would announce NC's before the bowl games were played?

In other words, most of those circumstances were a team with 1 loss, got named NC, then lost their bowl for loss number 2.

I expected about 4 losses this year so 10-2 is a nice finish. Still, in my mind it is more of what could have been. Losing to an inferior UF team was one of the toughest losses that I can remember. Had we have beaten UF, we would be headed to the SECCG and we would have controlled our own destiny to the NC. That did not happen and we are where we are.

No, but it is a deciding factor because such teams consistently did what was necessary to get in the championship game and took care of business on the biggest stage. The problem with it being the only factor is you have some fortunate champions like LSU in 2007 who lost to Kentucky and Arkansas.

By definition, greatness is exclusive. It includes only the best teams over time.
