6 is not as perfect as you think. Teams will be bitching that they didn't get the bye, and teams will be bitching that missed the playoff. There are actually more chance for the committee screw up.

I disagree, because making the playoff is easily the most important thing. If you get shafted out of the playoff over a team with very similar credentials, that's a way bigger issue than getting ranked 3rd and a team with similar credentials getting the 2 ranking and a bye. I didn't say there would be nothing people would argue about, but it would be a much better system for not totally screwing teams out of a deserved shot.
