It really isn't a waste of money. I'm sure they treat it like an investment. One day when Saban no longer resides there they will sell the house for hopefully more than they purchased it for. It's not like the paid it off for him and said it is now yours free and clear.

For the record, the Saban's DID NOT have a mortgage. The Crimson Tide Foundation didn't pay his house off....they PURCHASED it from him for a little over $3mil and he transferred the deed to them. So Saban actually does not own that house at all anymore....the Crimson Tide Foundation does. The article is poorly worded.

Nothing wrong with that, either. NCAA doesn't say anything about "special benefits" to coaches. Universities can structure their compensation packages in many ways beside just a straight salary.
