Mark Teixeira calls South Carolina a 'great baseball program'

How good are college baseball teams compared to minor league teams? Great programs, like South Carolina, according to former Dick Howser Award winner and World Series winner Mark Teixeira, are comparable to Single-A teams.

Teixeira, who spent two hours talking sports on the Mike & Mike radio show on Wednesday, believes that top-level college programs full of 18-22 year olds can compete with the hodgepodge of players found at the Single-A level.

“SEC, Pac-10, ACC baseball is probably High-A ball,” Teixeira said “We have guys who come out of college who run through High-A ball and Double-A pretty quickly. Most guys need to take a year in Low-A, a year in High-A, then they may move up. If you’re at South Carolina at a great baseball program, you can probably play in A ball right out of college.”
