Actually truth to this. He went 75-48 over a 9 year run and was SEC coach of the year in 2001 & 2006 (no other coach at Arkansas ever won that award). Historically he wasn't that bad, not nearly so much as some try to make him out to be.

Okay, so not all Arkansas fans have this reaction. That'll teach me to be over-broad in my generalizations.

But, yeah, I do get why lots of Arkansas fans aren't fond of Nutt. It's just the level of rage so many display that befuddles me. By any reasonable standard, Nutt gave the Razorbacks some pretty good years. He wasn't Saban, but he wasn't Smiley McJLS either. For that matter, he managed to win the West twice (three times, technically), which the much more revered Petrino never managed at all.
