The flaw is just basic math: 5 is more than 4.

In college football, there are five so-called "power conferences" and just four spots in the College Football Playoff. That means no matter how it shakes out, at least one champion from the SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, and Pac-12 is going to miss out on the playoff.

Except that there aren't five real power conferences.

I don't really see the flaw in that, especially this year. the playoffs aren't supposed to award you a spot for winning your conference. it's supposed to pick the 4 best teams, regardless of conference

They should of gone 8 teams. 1 from each power 5 and 3 at large.

This is why they should have used the BCS formula to determine the four teams.

There is a bigger flaw than that, from a fairness standpoint, which is that there are actually 10 FBS conferences. With 5 "power" conferences, the other five will never play for a championship.

Think about that. CFB is the only college sport where half of the teams in a division have no chance (OK, an extremely small chance) of playing for a championship.

The only fair thing to do is to expand to a 12 or 16 team format and include all conference winners. That, or relegate the "non-power" conferences to FCS.

Math suggest that 2/5 is less than 4/5. So it was a bigger problem under the BCS.

The biggest flaw is obviously - there isnt an 8 or 16 team playoff.

4 team really?

Should've been a six team playoff - 5 conference champions and an at-large. Top two seeds get a bye

This was intended from the start...then the FANS will continue to DEMAND a true Playoff system...and the teams will be expanded to 8 VERY SOON.

If FSU goes undefeated in the ACC they haven't done shyt. In the SEC west the might win 4 games out of 8.

The biggest problem is they put the power in the hands of 13 now 12 people with ZERO CRITERIA save this stupid thing about conference champions mattering, I am sorry, all conferences aren't equal.

The should have kept the unbiased polls, with voters from all over, ditching the coaches poll and bringing back the AP, Harris and adding a 3rd poll, and continued using the computers.

Now you have idiots talking about injuries, you have college football final placing Oregon and Notre Dame in the playoff, if it ended today over Bama or Auburn simply because they need to be diverse, instead of telling us who the best four teams are currently.

WELFARE FOR THE REST OF THE BYCHES is what we shpuld call the playoff.

There has never been more than 4 teams that deserve a shot at the title. It is usually around 3 teams at the end of the year that is playing well. If we start letting more than 4, you will have team like ND, or BYU who get in based on their history, or very easy reg season sechdules. A 4 team playoff is perfect, IMO.

I think 6 would have been the real perfect number.

5 champions and 1 at-large with the top two getting first round byes. I'd be afraid that going to 8 would take away some of the importance of conference championship games, with highly-ranked teams going in knowing it isn't paramount to win to make the playoff. With six, they would still be fighting for the two byes.

It dawned on me this weekend that the powers that be settled on a 4 team playoff for a reason. They knew that having 5 power conferences and only 4 teams would create a lot of buzz and controversy. We're only halfway through the season and look at all the talk, arguments and controversy there is already. Just imagine how this will ramp up as the season unfolds.

Interesting read.

After reading through the arguments I'm noticing logical inconsistency.

Sure, when asked what the best conference is, I always say "SEC" but that doesn't mean the SEC champion is better than PAC, B10, BIG12 champion per se.

My point is: Better conference doesn't mean best team

Frankly, football is all about matchups, and you really don't know who's better until they settle it on the field. For example, in 2011, I think LSU matched up really well with Oregon, but I think Alabama, the eventual champ, wouldn't match up as well. Not saying they lose, because I wouldn't really know unless they played.

Conclusion: Expand so that all FBS champs play, cut the regular season back to 10 games.

And the same problem that happened in 2011. LSU goes and risks it all in the seccg while Alabama rested. Could happen again if both win out and then Ole Miss beats State in Egg Bowl. I could see them both getting in the playoff, assuming Ole Miss beats UGA. Four is just straight up ig'nant
