He may have been open when the ball was released. Players close in on passes or could have been a bad pass (which it obviously was since it was batted).

According to Auburn's 247 site, Malzahn has complained to the SEC office about the pass interference on Coates and the pass interference on Jonathan Jones on the 4th and 8 play that gave State a first down
