Don't remember Herbies. Which one was that?
It was right down the street from the SAE house downtown
SAE's used to be notorious for skipping out on the bill
herbie was a short and plump Jewish man
EVERY dish was enough to feed 3 people - his burgers filled about 2/3 of a plate
I usually got an omelet and grits
he opened late in the afternoon and closed around 3 or 4 in the morning
Herbie was famous for screaming and at and cussing his patrons
all of them, even the girls
it was the best place in the world to eat after a night of hard drinking - better than Waffle house, and that's saying something..

If you're too young to have ever tasted Herbie's Balls, pardon the rest of us while we mourn the passing of one of Athens' dining legends. He cussed like a sailor, but his food was the perfect antidote to too many shots downtown. RIP Herbie. (h/t bendandbreak)

I actually got to know Herbie pretty well. I chased down some frat boy bill skippers for him one time. The burgers were huge. They were good drunk. I never stepped foot in there sober or before 2 am.

Herbies
Yep, the burgers were huge but his signature item was definitely Herbie's Balls. As far as I remember, they were more or less a sick cousin to Dunkin Donuts donut holes, except considerably larger and deep fried in pure lard.
I've wondered whatever happened to that place. Only visited a few times but it was memorable to be cursed out by Herbie while he took your order.
RIP, Herbie. There will never be another Athens restaurant quite like yours.

I remember hearing stories about a place like that. Must be it.
Never ate there myself though....

I remember herbie's and he was a grouchy, screaming dude indeed. 1986-1987ish was when I spent many a drunken late evening there at 3:00 a.m....then there was zoo night...TK Hardys.

...well this doesn't exactly look promising

Hoping its a 'just in case' type scenario because we are really gonna need to get a lot of carries this weekend but I agree it's not very promising.

Would be a great diversionary tactic.

Man that makes me crave some grease. Alcohol plus his food made people fight for some damn reason.
Used to head over there after we closed the bar.

My former roommate and lifelong friend worked there for a while.
Dr. Shu didn't speak a lick of English, but he could understand it. He communicated with my friend through grunts and hand signals.
Thanks for the flashback.

My people are telling me there is a debate over the best mediocre chinese food in athens, and that there is a rumor of some place called Herbies that was once the GOAT hangover cure.

Herbie's was a very interesting place and Herbie was very interesting character.
Think - Louie from 'Taxi', but even a shade creepier.

I'm happy today.
On the other hand, I'm usually pretty happy.
PS, Dallas, thanks for the quick shipping.
