Great post. What happened to Majors was his own doing imo. The players, AD and a very large faction of major boosters all turned against him for good reason. Fulmer stepping in during Majors' absence and beating UF & UGA was the proverbial nail in the coffin for ol' Johnny.

Then he decides to come back earlier than expected (scared that Fulmer will take his job) and blows two games UT should've won and pisses away any chance of a national or SEC championship.

Majors is obviously a Tennessee legend and I hate the circumstances of how he left but it was absolutely time for him to move aside and let Phil take the reigns. The bitterness that Majors still carries towards Fulmer nearly 25 years later is quite sad tbh.

Thanks and I agree it's quite sad that Johnny still can't seem to bury the hatchet. But I really don't think he's ready to admit what a mean-arse drunk he was during that time period. Age has mellowed him and yes, he's certainly a legend who I respect for many reasons (prior to those events) but his alcoholism and paranoia got to him when it came to Phil.

What made it worse, imho, is Majors opened a rift in our fan base that still hasn't healed. Johnny was charming, funny as hell, and in general just entertaining when he faced the fans, especially on his show. He really was the proto-Spurrier in many ways whereas Phil never was anything like that. In contrast, he was stoic and incredibly loyal.

The good news is that it looks like Coach Jones is getting them together more and more. I just hope it works. We need to heal that rift for the sake of our fan base.

The Vols are a sleeping giant. How long it takes them to regain their former glory, or whether they can ever return, is one of the great football questions.

The Gators were a sleeping giant that woke up, stomped a lot of people, and then sort of... dozed off again.
