What state was this in? We fire teacher all the time at the end of the year when they have a poor performance.

George it is the exception, not the rule when it comes to teacher tenure.

Texted my wife this link as she's in administration.

Said "whole lotta people losing they jobs".

Her response.

As they should, but I can't help but wonder what was the course of action with this student? I am a bit jaded, but it sounds like they knew he was an obvious discipline problem. Were they limited in their power with consequences for previous incidents? Was OCR involved if he was a minority? Had they tried harsher consequences for the earlier incidents, and told they didn't have any evidence? I'd love to know the other side. The implications of this case could be beneficial for schools, even though it is the result of a horrible act.

True, but I would imagine it's like that in most Right To Work states. We still have the good ole boy system in some areas. But we do a decent job of letting awful teachers go.

With special education students your hands are tied. They can only be suspended 10 days of OSS without an MDR. He should have been given those at the minimum for the fighting and sexual touching.

And God help you if part of his "disability" is sexual misconduct and it's written that way in the IEP. Then you're really fricked.

I agree to some extent though I'm confident I don't share the depth of your understanding of the issue that we should see in your response to my post.

Dewey wanted to create societal units of work, not whole people. But society becomes a closed feedback loop in this model and the inherent distortion in the system means it will move towards a less organized state.

Education organized around the idea of the Aristotelian good would negate a lot of the silliness of Dewey.

The educations system teaches people to be workers, not thinkers.

It teaches you to memorize, flush out and repeat.

It teaches you to keep chasing the carrot in front of your face.

It wastes incredible amounts of time teaching things easily forgotten instead of developing whole human beings. The system creates human doings.

I most feverishly disagree with the idea that it decentralizes anything. It prepares new fuel in the form of workers for the machine, a machine that is without a doubt a hybrid of corporation and state.

I figured a man of your intellect would be above this kind of retort.

Educators are idiots. Principals and school superintendents should come the ranks of "normal" people rather than promoting teachers or electing politicians.

I live in the county where this occurred. Different school system though. This kid has been doing these things for years, but the principal says that the slates are wiped clean each August. I hope the parents of the girl rape the school system. Glad my kids go to a private school.

And that's not a subtle brag. It's relatively cheap for a private school, and I work off tuition by coaching and taking care of the athletic fields.

That sounds like a decision made by someone not at the school level. Perhaps influenced by the Office of Civil Rights. That happens far more than you'd suspect.
