Total D is often times totally misleading. Scoring D is the most important obviously. Yards per play, negative plays (TFL) and TOS are the best measure imo.

Both can be skewed easily.

Take for instance a team who gives up 450 yards per game but only 17 points per game. Good defense? Sounds like it, despite giving up a ton of yardage.

Scoring D can be skewed if an offense is really bad and gives short fields/turnovers constantly to an opposing team. So let's say they give up just 350 yards a game, but 24 points a game, good defense? Could be but the offense really gives them no help.
