How else do you decide the best teams if not by conference champions?

The BCS formula was better in that it included a computer algorithm component that was unbiased.

I thought the whole reason behind a playoff was to get rid of the opinion poll approach to picking a champion.

Either a play off OR a poll, NOT both.

Respectfully disagree. There should be at least a marginally unbiased method for ranking the 4 best teams and I prefer the BCS formula to a biased selection committee. By instructing the selection committee members to disregard the polls leaves them conscience free to for instance select an 8th ranked AP conference champion to participate in the the playoffs.

How short a dog's memory is. There was no end to bitching and complaining about the nerd's computers and how they were inherently biased.

You just don't get it.

Does the AP also rank NFL teams for the playoffs?

When there are play offs, no one cares about AP rankings (or any other opinion poll), it's just SO ingrained at this point, no one can even imagine going through a college football season without looking at opinion polls.

NEWSFLASH: Conference standings will be the new opinion polls.
