He didn't give it to himself. A lot of different ones were floating around and reporters asked him about all of them and which he would prefer if he had to choose.

If you give yourself a nickname you are lame and the nickname is deemed lame as well. It's in the rulebook somewhere.

Kenny didn't try to give himself anything. The interviewers asked and pressed the question before he even designated which 'nick name' he liked.

"I know about Bun B and I know coach Sumlin has got a little relationship with Bun B," Hill said. "So hopefully he'll let me be Kenny Trill."

ESPN article above makes it pretty clear that Hill didn't give himself the nickname. He just likes Trill best.
