Contender for what? Kentucky is never winning the eastern division during my lifetime. The east was as down as it is ever going to get during the last 4 or 5 years and Kentucky still couldn't win it
They couldn't even sniff it. In fairness, neither could we.

It's hard to not be excited, all those feels you must have, but lets not make the same mistake Vol fans make every year and overreact to the first game.
We are probably headed for 4 wins, 5 at best. Which is a huge improvement over last year and most of our starters will be returning for next year.

In all fairness, Alabama and Auburn couldn't win the East with Joker Phillips in charge of their team.

If Stoops does a great job, someone will hire him away.

Like others in the thread have stated, bowl eligibility should be where UK fans lay their hopes for now.

The only dark horses in Kentucky...

Yes. In the East, if they get it going they could be in the conversation for winning the division.
No doubt they could (in time) if everything fell into place.
Look at UT. A neighboring state that had it going until Peyton Manning graduated and the leg-shitting began.
Why not Kentucky?

Considering friggin MIZZOU won the division last year and even lowly Arkansas made the trip to ATL 3 times, anything could happen I guess.
To be fair, Arkansas is a much better program than Kentucky.

You could help everyone by beating LSU and State pls

LOL, we won the national title after Manning left numbnuts. Then, we kept winning and went to another BCS Bowl and won 1 SEC title, 1 National title and 4 SEC East titles from 98-07 (after Manning).

The answer to the OP is, NO.
The statement about UT is over simplification. First, UT has been mismanaged from the AD. The root of their issues begin at this point.
However, it is much deeper than that. Think about the state of Tennessee it doesn't have enough DI recruits year in and out to sustain a top program. So UT has made a living on the surrounding states throughout the years. ESPN and it non-stop college football games broadcast has made it harder for UT to sell that they will put you on TV. Southern Ohio kids can get on TV playing for UC, West Virginia kids can get on TV playing for WV. South Carolina locked down the state for the most part, etc…
I suspect UT will figure out the new paradigm soon, but they got caught in the old ways for to long and their closets competitors raced ahead of them.

Yes. Once the Manning ripple calmed, the post-Manning leg-shitting was fully felt.

We had a top 20 class last season and could pull in the same this season.
Not good enough. This is the SEC. Either you stack a few top 10 classes, or you don't dream of winning the title.
Heck A&M rolled into the SEC with an average of top 20 classes (from our Big 12 era) and we have been absolutely middle of the pack so far. If we take a step forward this year or the next its because we stacked two or three top 10 classes on each other.
I know that is a new territory for y'all but this isn't the ACC. The options are to play with top ten talent, or be cannon fodder for programs that do.
Now top 20 talent MIGHT get you TO Atlanta in that weak SEC East ala Mizzou. That is a goal to shoot for.

I'm a big a Kentucky football fan as anyone, but I'd like to see us go up against a better team than UT Martin before I get my hopes up.
As far as this season goes, the game against Ohio will be a bit more telling as to how far along we've come since last season.
If Stoops keeps recruiting at the level that he is right now, then I really see no reason why we wont be able to compete for Atlanta in a couple of seasons... once he gets his own players in there and his own system running smoothly.
Spot on Cat. UK is definitely on the rise under Stoops. How far can they go? Hard to tell at this point. Another solid recruiting class in 2015 and UK could enter the conversation, that is for sure.

Damien Harris and another top 20 class is a must in my eyes to keep things progressing.

UK does NOT have a bright future. Kentucky is the only SEC state whose residents' favorite school is a non-SEC school.

UL has very few fans outside the city limits of Louisville, and UK has more fans in Louisville anyway, not to mention across the state.
