Nick Saban says he won't mess with Lane Kiffin's play-calling rhythm

“My thing has always been that, as a play-caller, you have to let the guy have the rhythm of what he’s trying to do,” Saban said. “I had rather make my suggestions between series, not while we have the ball, and maybe say, ‘Look, they’re doing a lot of this. We thought they’d do that. Let’s make sure we get back to that.’ More of that type of thing than while we’re going on a series say, ‘Do this or do that.’

“I might say, 'The next time we get the ball in a good field position, let’s take a shot on these guys. They’re really playing us close outside.’ I might make those kinds of recommendations rather than try to get in the way of a signal-caller while he’s trying to call the game and have a rhythm about how he calls the game.

“I know that’s putting a lot of trust in another person, but that’s been the most effective way through the years for me as a head coach. Because I think you can really mess a guy up if you’re always questioning what he does or why did we call that or are you sure that’s what we want to do on third down. Then the guy’s like …”
