pre wire service nattys are always a bit ambiguous, but bama has 4 undefeated teams that went to the rose bowl. they put southern football on the map, not sure why they count 1941 (dumbest natty to be claimed in the history of nattys) but bama with 14 nattys is legit as it gets. they have 10 modern poll era wire service national titles (ap, coaches)

i dont know why atm counts things the way they do, pretty amazing.

we could actually claim 1908 since we were the majority vote getter, but yeah, unless a team is the majority recipient from the natty services prior to 1936, then they shouldnt count em.

ole miss got screwed pretty bad in the early 60s. i dont blame em for counting 1960 and 62. they cant count 1959, they fd that up themselves, but unfortunately, because they were already int he wire service era and didnt get any wire service nattys, ole miss has officially zero national titles.

Agree, although with the caveat that the Rose Bowl was not considered the "championship game" as Alabama fans will claim.

In fact, multiple publications from around the country named "national champions" and there were clear regional biases at play. It was common for four, five, even six teams to be declared champs.

Alabama did put together the first true run of really good Southern football teams in the 1920s, but there were predecessors.

Namely, Vanderbilt was the first Southern program to even be worthy of consideration by the Northeastern powers. Meanwhile, teams like LSU and Auburn had their share of regional success, and each can point to a year when they "should" be the national champs (this may or may not be true).

But it John Heisman's 1917 Georgia Tech team that was the first Southern champ that really had the backing of the rest of the country. They were the first great Southern football team, and they put Southern football on the map.

No. Bama was rarely if ever the first choice of the Rose Bowl. In one of those years, the top 5 teams all declined Rose Bowl invites and bama ended up as the participant as the 6th choice after Tulane.

Fact is the Rose Bowl was never a "defacto" national championship game as the top teams in the country often did not want the travel, time and expense commitments required to go play in it and declined offers while bama was always willing to accept an offer after other better teams said no.

As for AU, AU has 5 legit claims:

1. 1913 - Recognized by 3 selectors when there were not many. This is an iffy one, but 6 of AU's 8 opponents had winning records and AU blew out everyone except LSU (7-0).
2. 1957
3. 1983 - This one is a no-brainer and AU was selected NC by 19 selectors, many more than any other team including Miami (12).
4. 2004
5. 2010

That is 5 legit claims for AU.
