I do this at football games. When someone overreacts, I wonder which one of us it is.

We've lived in Opelika for the past 6 years and have just actually moved into Auburn. We've loved almost every minute of living in the area.
1. There are absolutely pretentious folks here. Just like there are everywhere else. We choose not to hang out with them.
2. The police might suck, I've not had much experience with them, but where are the cops awesome?
I think the pretentious stuff comes from a LOT of young, intelligent, relatively well-intentioned folks, trying to keep up with the major accomplishments of their parents.
Lots of people stay after college. I heard a stat quoted from AU staff on a campus tour a couple years ago:
Average in-state students come from a household with an income of $150,000. Average out-of-state students come from a household with an average income of $350,000. Average ACT scores for incoming freshman: 28. Just an interesting fact. Thats a LOT of expectation.

My wife and I plan to retire to Auburn eventually. There is great golf, decent food, we have season football and basketball tickets, go to a few baseball games. It is close to Atlanta if you want to shop or travel. There is a reason it is always voted at the top of best places to live.
There are pretentious people everywhere, you may just need new friends or a new attitude.

Auburn is taking off.
The new developing areas have not destroyed historic areas and have mostly been placed in outlying areas. No one is complaining about the new CVS, BurgerFi development that took place of the dumpy Days Inn.
The PGA Tour is coming through Auburn/Opelika next year. Companies are building research centers just down the interstate. I believe more excellent food optiions will open in the future to compete with Acre, Hamilton's, Amsterdam.
