I understand.

Was that the Daughters of the Confederacy rally or The Sons of Confederate Veterans rally?

Both have been instrumental in conserving and restoring that statehouse for well over 100 years.

Why should we care how the rest of the country views us? We're South Carolinians. Our State House and statehouse grounds are unique among all others in this country.

We know we're not racists. We know we're fiercely independent. We know the races, all races, get along here probably better than anywhere else in the country. You don't see riots here. You don't see the hatred here that you see in most other places.

Why should we care about labels other fricktards in other parts of the country might put on us when they have yet to sweep their own backporch first?

We have the mountains and the beaches and everything in between. We have rich tradition and cultures shared, we are polite to one another and we respect one another.

I just don't get sometimes why some feel the need to paint us as racist or bigots when nothing could be further from the truth.

I don't think that flag means what you think it means Bluefin ... friend.

Because perception = $. It's great that we've been able to land the BMWs and the Boeings of the world to come to our state but what about our athletic teams getting hosed on hosting? I don't think the NCAA should be interfering with such things but they do, and it costs the school.

Anyway, I can understand acknowledging history. I can understand that people are proud that their ancestors fought to protect their homes from invader and not to protect slavery (although anyone who doesn't think the Civil War was started because of slavery needs to read the secession papers of the CSA) With that said, that CSA flag that flew on the state house and now on the state house grounds wasn't put up during the Civil War. Do people really think we just put one up during the Civil War and the Union just let it fly up there when they took Columbia? No. It was taken down. And then a new one was put up? Why? Because our politicians wanted to show to the world that we were pro-segregation.

People may fly the Confederate flag for whatever reason, but that flag on the state house grounds was flown as a symbol of racism but the story has since been changed to state pride.

I'm not sure, but they had a pretty big turnout.

Two years ago I would've agreed with you. However, since leaving South Carolina and moving to a different part of the country, I've begun to notice just how negatively people view where I come from. It is frustrating to hear that "South Carolina is beautiful but the racism is too much," as if they know how it actually is. Yes, there is racism that exists all over the South, but I truly don't believe it is as bad as they think. It's hard to just ignore it when you hear it over and over again. When pictures like the one I posted go viral, it just furthers their skewed view, but I can't really say it is unjustified.

Like I said, I am from the South and I don't think the flag inherently means hate, but many, many other people do. It is associated with a dark time in our history and I believe it is insensitive to proudly display something that many people might take offense to. It is regressive and just fuels the rest of the country's desire to shite on the South. I'm proud of where I come from but I just think this is something that has to change.
