I take it this is a response to the post that I made, so I'll reply here. The comment I made was relatively tongue-in-cheek, and I really don't like to get serious on TD, but I just want to address this since there has been all this talk about the SC Statehouse recently.

I took this picture the last time I was in Columbia.

I know that the national perception of racism in SC is both skewed and inaccurate, but this type of stuff does not help diminish those untruths. It is one thing to fly the Confederate flag at the Statehouse, but to have rallies/ceremonies where this is considered acceptable is just ridiculous. This isn't the 1960's. Now, I know it's not actually a Klan rally, but it certainly wouldn't be far fetched to believe that some of those who attend these types of things may be sympathetic to the cause. It quite literally makes it look like racism and bigotry influence our state's politics, which we all know is not the case. You can say it is a "pride in my heritage" type of deal, but this sort of First Amendment exercise brings a negative national perception to South Carolina. I've always loved the historical trend of SC defiance, but this shouldn't be something to be proud of. It makes us look like nothing more than uneducated and intolerant rednecks. I say that as a proud southerner.

To keep the Confederate flag flying at the Statehouse is one thing, but having this draped across the steps of the Statehouse for almost 4 days is overkill. We all know that the flag has different meanings for different people, but it is time we realize that it is largely regarded as a negative symbol, and to have it proudly displayed all over the center of our state's government is idiotic.

As for the Aggies having Yell Practice on the Statehouse grounds, I don't really care. Truth is, I've heard more opposition to the idea that a visiting school holds their gay little tradition on the Statehouse steps more than I ever did to things like Confederate rallies in the 5 years I lived in Columbia. I couldn't care less what some arrogant Texans think of us, but I do want our state to move past things like the photo above.

This isn't an attack on you, scrooster. It's just how I feel about the situation.

I understand.

Was that the Daughters of the Confederacy rally or The Sons of Confederate Veterans rally?

Both have been instrumental in conserving and restoring that statehouse for well over 100 years.

Why should we care how the rest of the country views us? We're South Carolinians. Our State House and statehouse grounds are unique among all others in this country.

We know we're not racists. We know we're fiercely independent. We know the races, all races, get along here probably better than anywhere else in the country. You don't see riots here. You don't see the hatred here that you see in most other places.

Why should we care about labels other fricktards in other parts of the country might put on us when they have yet to sweep their own backporch first?

We have the mountains and the beaches and everything in between. We have rich tradition and cultures shared, we are polite to one another and we respect one another.

I just don't get sometimes why some feel the need to paint us as racist or bigots when nothing could be further from the truth.

I don't think that flag means what you think it means Bluefin ... friend.
