What do you think offered a bid means?

How is this relevant to my statement? Offered a bid, allowed in, not allowed in, doesn't matter. All of these things should be at the discretion of what I feel should be a private entity and free of any regulation.

Regardless of whether or not they should be private entities, they are not. My understanding is that the university gives them sweetheart deals on renting the property on which these new palatial houses are being built. These are prime locations that effectively make the greeks the face of the university as they're the 1st thing you now see when driving onto campus. With that privilege comes the responsibility to:

1. More closely resemble the actual student population of the university
2. Not bring the university bad press like it did last year

If they have a problem with it - it's looking less and less like they do - then they can move off campus

You think someone else would pay more to...put a business?, more student housing?...in those houses? How sweet do we really think these deals are? Is it cheaper than other student housing? I don't really care but I doubt the university would do it if it was a bad deal for the university.

I would hope they don't have a problem with allowing in any race of individual, but that's really not my issue. My problem is with people who are offended clubs open their membership to whomever they wish.

Oh the university definitely benefits. I didn't mean to imply otherwise. The greek system is a big draw for a lot of prospective students and those palatial houses make for a very aesthetically pleasing face of the university. But those benefits can be quickly outweighed by negative PR caused by accusations of discrimination and those sweetheart deals I'd imagine can be revoked. And I've heard the deals are very sweet, as in a fraction of the fair market value that a business would pay.

I've read they pay the University a $1 per year lease for the land. Many have also been given favorable loan terms to re-build their houses.

Not really. The Greek organizations still own the actual buildings, just not the land.

University definitely gets a benefit from them. Right or wrong, they're a huge draw for many potential students. The question is, is that benefit worth the stigma of the organizations being discriminatory in their selection process? Some discrimination is understood, but the past action of eliminating blacks and other minorities was ridiculous. At least we're now seeing some progress, but I'm reluctant to give them much credit since they University barred all media access to Rush this year.

I thought I read last year that frats at Bama had been integrated for years. Maybe it was just some of them and not all of them.

Some have, but most of the more upper tier have not.

As many of you already know, one of our students posted a photo on Snap Chat on Saturday afternoon that included particularly offensive racial language. I immediately asked the Office of Student Conduct to conduct a full investigation and was assured by the national Chi Omega headquarters that they had already begun an investigation of their own. There will be appropriate University consequences once our investigation is completed. These consequences will be in addition to any sanctions Chi Omega's national officers decide to impose. We are all extremely disappointed when any student uses language that is disrespectful or offensive to any segment of the UA community. We are especially sad that this incident occurred on a day that was an exciting and happy one for the young women who participated in fall recruitment. Behavior, actions and choices that disparage other students are particularly reprehensible and do not represent the values or meet the expectations of our University community. UA and the members of our Panhellenic sororities took great strides forward on bid day by pledging a diverse group of young women that included 21 African American members. The results of bid day and the dedication of hundreds of students, employees and alumni who worked extremely hard this past year to achieve the important and significant milestones UA reached on bid day cannot and should not be dismissed or minimized. I want to assure you that The University of Alabama will not allow this incident to interrupt our progress. We will continue to work diligently and with a renewed commitment to make sure that UA is a welcoming and inclusive campus every day of the week.

Judy Bonner President

I saw the picture on Twitter. It was a picture of 3 girls smiling with the caption "Chi O got No Nigg*s".

Shameful

That'd be great though sadly unrealistic. I'd currently settle for members of University of Alabama affiliated institutions (that were widely and nationally criticized for discriminatory practices one year ago) not using social media and a racist slur to celebrate discriminatory practices.

One drunk, young girl is not indicative of the group of Sorority girls as a whole. Just like Harvey Updyke doesn't encapsulate the Alabama fan base. She sent what she thought was going to be a deleted picture to a couple for Fraternity bros, who screenshot it and start passing it around. Should she have done it? Of course not it's incredibly stupid to send something like that to other people and trust them to use good judgment with it. But I'm not willing to go out and say that all sororities at Alabama racist because of it. It would be great if we could end racism in the country, but like you said that's unrealistic. I don't think one girl using a slang word on social media warrants this kind of attention, but that's just me.

It wouldn't warrant this kind of attention if not for our very poor track-record. We're not going to be judged the same as everyone else and every seemingly-small incident is going to make headlines. Is that fair? Maybe not but it's the reality and every single young, drunk UofA student (especially those in greek organizations) better figure it out if they don't want to be publicly shamed by their university president and the national media.

The terrible thing is, it's likely that these girls were damn Yankees who came down here for that 'srat life'. With the exception of Brookies, and prep school kids, most natives of Alabama have frequent interaction with other races (which tends to temper racism).

This this this.

I know a lot of people, that I consider close to me, that have almost adopted the mind set of Bull Connor or Jim Crow when they decided to attend the University of Alabama. It's like they think that mindset is needed to fit in. The fraternity life magnifies that attitude as well.

Considering a video with over a million hits called "Racist Alabama Sororities" is seen everyday depicting UA as a gulag of racial hatred, I think the issue warranted addressing.
