I agree with your first sentence.
An equally accurate second sentence would be:
Auburn was a fake punt away from being the reigning national champions for the second time in 4 years.

Auburn won the conference championship and returns most of its offense that did that. If we were any other school, Finebaum wouldn't rank us any lower than #2.
Finebaum is a troll, but even more than that he is a sower of propaganda. Ranking Auburn at 5 will sure cause some boony phone calls on his shitty radio show, but it also helps set the narrative for the season that he wants.
Fortunately we have games to decide who wins and loses.
