Why was LSU vs. Auburn such a beat down last year?

Just watched the replay last night, Lsu was about to go up 28-0 in the beginning of the second quarter before they fumbled. How did this happen? Obviously Auburn's defense is partly to blame, but Marshall was having a lot of trouble simply completing a pass.
I've seen a lot of Auburn fans claim that they would have won if the game had been played later in the season. I just don't by that. It was a vicious blowout and Lsu was in complete control on offense and defense for the entire game.

LSU was just the better team across the board last year at the time the game was played. Miles/Chavis have a tendency of shutting down "gimmick offenses" early and getting a lead that the team seems to just hold onto regardless of halftime offensive adjustments. They get up early and hold the course.

AU had nearly 400 yards of offense the last three quarters...doesnt sound like LSU was in complete control to me.
It was our first road game and Nick was still learning the system. They had 2 long runs and a short field to work with...recipe for disaster.
You cannot play like crap in DV and expect to compete.

Auburn was too busy thinking about Bama

Eh, defense almost let them get back into it after the 2nd half. But I still think we win if we played them later in the season, especially since they played in Death Valley.

Auburn did make a game of it in the second half.
They gained an impressive amount of yardage and started to show what they would do the rest of the year.

we played horribly, they played well and waxed us. We got better. Simple really. If you can "by that"

AU experimented for the first time with a 5 down linemen set early in the game. On 3 of the 4 plays we used it, LSU exposed the folly in the strategy and broke off long runs. Couple that with a botched snap on a punt and we put ourselves in a hole too deep to climb out of.
Additionally, we were still figuring out who we were on offense and Marshall struggled to complete some easy passes in the first half.
Despite all of that, LSU most definitely was not in total control the whole game. Even early in the game we were running the ball effectively. Some poor execution on some passes and a couple of bad play calls sabotaged some early momentum.

LSU was in control in an adverse, rain environment, but it was a game in which the AU team shaped their identity. The year before, they would have simply collapsed, but the guys made the decision at halftime that they would slug it out till the end. I admit that the game was really never in doubt (early mistakes are hard to overcome), but I was proud that the team never gave up. I believe it was a big step in the team buying into the coaches message, that allowed the next step at TAMU. The team decided in the rain down there at Tiger Stadium that they would never, ever give up. Fast forward to UGA & UAT....

Seems like AU's offense would be compatible with a stiff, wind-driven dew.
Their turnovers made it a beatdown. Without them, I still think LSU wins, but Auburn made it pretty easy for us. Also LSU's defense is geared to keep offenses like AU's out of the endzone, even if they put up impressive yardage.

LSU's decline started at halftime of the AU game.
They lost three of the next 6 games, while AU was going like this!

Lots of misconceptions regarding that game. It never actually rained, it was simply very, very humid.

Jeremy Hill was a beast and LSU is perhaps the best-equipped defense for stopping Auburn in the SEC.
They were the better team that night.

Auburn beat themselves...Only logical reason.

First game on the road.
Dug a deep hole, in the first quarter, that was tough to get out of.
Came back and battled the last three quarters.
That was the turning point of the season, IMO.
