What I believe really got all this mess rolling was when Texas notified us originally that they were in negotiations to take the bulk of the Texas/Oklahoma teams to the Pac12; without even consulting us first... Seriously. Think about that for a second. That's insane.
That's the first time we started seriously talking to the SEC and got either cold feet or felt the deal to stay was good enough.
Colorado saw the way the wind was blowing and bolted to the PAC, Nebraska the BIG10.
We stayed another year with promises of Beebee bucks from Nebraska's and Colorado's payout and then we bolted for the SEC when the highschool crap on the LHN got around.
The Longhorns shopped themselves around for a bit, but the neither the BIG10 or Pac wants the LHN. For ESPN it was a cheap way to keep the status quo mainly in check. There are many hands in the cookie jar with the LHN payout and Texas Athletics currently gets only about 9 million, reportedly.
Now, the entire Big12 is crippled when it comes to putting together a viable conference channel and the already regional viewership has shrunk.
I'm so glad to be out.

Colorado saw they were being left out in a proposed PAC 16.
Allegedly (for the shithead law student in our midst) it was Texas, Texas Tech, A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and one other slot open (because the California schools weren't so keen on a Baptist University being a part of their conference). Colorado dove in before their spot was taken by Baylor. Once the deal fell through, Utah jumped in as well.

The straight up gall of this still stops me in my mental tracks years later.
