Ironically, Sam Houston and Davy Crockett both served under Jackson in this war. Then we solidified the nickname for both our state and university when we marched off to help Texas.
Just in our old Big "12" Kansas State and Oklahoma State were the Aggies originally. Then you have New Mexico State off the top of my head.
Looking it up since I was curious:
Michigan State
Colorado State
UC Davis
UConn
Originally - now something new and cool
Utah State - still Aggies (which was fun when we played them)
Plus many more I've never heard of.
And, your Tennesseans where leaving bad women, bad laws and bad debts to start over in the promised land.
