Best Buy had a 50" Samsung plasma for $400 last weekend, but it was a 720p. I've heard the average viewer can't tell the difference between a 720p and a 1080p, but I've never compared. The guy there said the Samsung plasmas were pretty much the only ones they were still getting in inventory.

I'd tend to agree. For a 50" plasma, I think you'd be OK at 720p and likely couldn't tell much difference. Any bigger than that and I would probably head toward a 1080p, but even then your picture is only as good as your source, and most satellite is compressed enough anyway that there's really probably not much difference. Also depends on how close you sit to the TV. For football and something with fast-moving items on the picture like auto racing, hockey (basically any sports) plasmas will look smoother than most LCDs because of the ultra-high refresh rate.

depends on the content, size and distance, as well as your vision
