Have had this discussion a few times. I have been told "If you weren't born into it, you don't understand."

Which is a fallacy, also. I went to college. I KNOW what it is to be proud of a school. But that has nothing to do with being a true fan, either.

Well....I gotta get going. I actually enjoyed this thread. I think the OP feels similar to me and was trying to make a point...but I am not sure. Regardless, I enjoyed talking and getting a glimpse into some of your thoughts. And, while I consider myself a fan, I also understand that there are those that have a deeper pride and appreciation for their respective school that I could ever understand.

If you attend, or have attended the school you are a fan of...congratulations!

You guys have had some good years lately...and I think your new coach will keep it going. Only time will tell. I have no doubt you have some bandwagoners (I have been wondering the same thing and almost didn't use the blooming word!) Most on this board tend to pull for teams that have traditionally struggled. I agree with you man. I love true fans, alumni or not. What i refer to a sidewalk fan is someone who boasts, brags excessively and bashes other fans/fan bases without really ever contributing very much to an actual University--alumni or not. I can tell you love your dawgs. That, to me is NOT a sidewalk fan but a true fan.

It's a great feeling to be a fan of a team that doesn't cause me issues of deep personal insecurity.

Cheer for whomever you like.

I go to Indiana University but I root for the Razorbacks. I was born and raised in Arkansas and I consider myself a true fan. My whole family root for the Hawgs.

Thanks! It's nice to hear you say that! And I think we agree on what a true fan is and a sidewalk fan.

I wonder how those men and women who went into the military instead of going to college would take to being called "not true fans" or "sidewalkers".

Probably by curbstomping the lot of you.

A "sidewalk fan" is what people like to call a fan of a school to make themselves feel superior (particluarly on message boards) to said fans.

Pay no attention to the ones calling them out . . . they are idiots.

I walk on LSU's sidewalks daily during the school year. I'm a huge sidewalker.

How successful would athletic programs be if their only fans were people that attended the university? How much money would they make? The stands would be a lot emptier.

Dont agree. There are plenty of non graduates who donate big bucks to various schools. If you dont think they are important you have lost your mind.

Our entire vast global network of bagmen is entirely composed of sidewalkers. Everybody knows that. We have bagmen in Africa just waiting on the first players to come from there.

Perhaps only alumni should donate money to the schools athletic foundation or fundraising arm or buy season tickets.

So that's why all those Ethiopian kids are wearing consignment "Auburn, 2014 National Champions!" t-shirts.

Sorry, low blow. Mea culpa.

I'm a sidewalker and damn proud of it. I have relatives who attend Mizzou and I pay taxes that support the University of Missouri. As stated in this thread quite a few times already, the fine Universities( Vanderbilt not included) would not be able to remain open without state taxes. I don't have numbers to back my claim up but I'd be willing to bet that at least 50 percent of the operating budget of these State universities come from taxes and a significant portion of that 50 percent come from sidewalk fans like me.
